SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Springs Fire in East County is now fully contained after three brush fires prompted mandatory evacuations in the area, Cal Fire authorities announced today.

Cal Fire confirmed to ABC 10News that the Springs Fire in East County was caused by a vehicle, as investigators found pieces of a catalytic converter near the side of the road where the fire started.

The Springs Fire initially started as three separate brush fires: The forward rate of spread on one of them was stopped, while the other two merged. The fires prompted evacuations east of Jamul Thursday evening.

Cal Fire crews responded to the initial incident Thursday at 6:22 p.m. after large plumes of dark smoke were seen rising into the air along Lyons Valley Road and Honey Springs Road.

At around 9:45 p.m., Cal Fire reported the fire was 10% contained and charred at least 50 acres.

By Friday morning, the fire was at 20% contained, with the acreage burned still the same from overnight, according to Cal Fire.

Authorities issued evacuation orders and warnings that remained in effect until Friday morning. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office said at 10:37 a.m. that all evacuation orders had been lifted, while changes were made to the evacuation warnings.

California Highway Patrol issued the following road closures:

  • Lyons Valley Road and Honey Springs Road
  • Lyons Valley Road and Japatul Valley Road
  • Wisecarver Truck Trail and Skyline Truck Trail
  • Lyons Valley Road and Lyons Creek Road

An evacuation point was set up at Edwards Cinema at 2951 Jamacha Rd, El Cajon.

Cal Fire says to help prevent roadside fires, be sure to keep your car well-maintained, avoid driving over dry grass and make sure no parts are dragging.

"A few simple steps can make a big difference in reducing wildfire risk," the agency wrote on X.
